in paris late late last night. Decide to keep things simple and eat
breakfast (i.e. coffee/croissant) at the hotel. I sit down at bar.
Order coffee and croissant. They tell me that they don’t serve breakfast,
I have to go to breakfast room. I go to breakfast room. Order
same. They tell me that they only have buffet and for coffee and
croissant I have to go to bar. Sit down at bar. Again. Order
same. Again. They bring coffee but tell me croissants are
out. They only have some left in the buffet room. I say, I don’t
want buffet as it’s too much food, I only would like a croissant. They say they are out. I ask
if it is not possible to simply bring a croissant from the buffet room.
Reply, “I don’t know what goes on over there, that’s not my job”. I am
annoyed (as that phrase instantly annoys anyone having spent time in the US I should think), and drink only my coffee. Ten minutes later she comes back, and
says she found a pain au chocolat that someone else had ordered but didn’t eat,
and I could have it.
You can definitely bet I ate that pain au chocolate. I’m not at all too good to be eating a stranger’s pain au chocolate when hungry in Paris…
PS – The picture of coffee above is not from Paris, but Salzburg – in case the silver tray, glass of water and whipped cream on the side didn’t give it away.
