I commented to someone recently that everything in a store we passed by was either black or gray or somewhere in between. And they looked at me somewhat bewildered and said, “but that’s the Scandinavian rainbow!”. It made perfect sense, that they would think of it that way. Like many of these winter days, everything is somewhere on the spectrum between dark and light, with lots of interpretation in between- but not much outside of that (maybe yet another illustration of Jante’s Law?).
I wear a lot of black and gray myself, so I I should find this welcoming but the more I’m surrounded by it I can tell if I find it insanely practical or a tad dreary… I picked a few of my local favorites from Day Birger & Mikkelsen and Malene Birger (quickly becoming my faves about town here – and yes, the same ones from the apartment) to illustrate just how serious people are about this Scandinavian rainbow stuff…And while I still might be on the fence as to where I sit, I will say this. When you’re surrounded by shades of gray like this, the real colors in life – fresh flowers, a bright scarf, a beautifully tinted pastry, and most importantly, a genuine smile don’t just blend into the background – they really pop.
