Diplo Repost: Love the Von Trapps and all of their chic….
Austria has to be one of the last remaining places where people actively wear parts of their national costume as daily wear, and no where is that more true than in the Salzburg area. Lederhosen are de rigeur for weekend strolls when the hills are alive. And while you will see plenty of dirndl’s out and about, the full regalia is usually reserved for special events or holidays.
However you will see lots of traditional elements worn individually. This style is called the Landhausmode, which essentially means “estate style dressing” or “landed gentry dressing” from what I can tell, and a phrase completely unsurprising around here where terms like landed gentry and crusades are still relevant.
To give you a sense of how to run your own Austro-chic landed gentry look, here are a few shots from various stores in Salzburg – some of it can be quite elegant. The key is to mix a check print shirt, tailored jacket and some type of paisley or printed scarf and you’ll be well on your way – pointers for the gents and wee ones below as well.
