Sunshine in Tulum...

Just over a year ago, and somehow I never shared these pictures... There are plenty of others from our Mexico adventures, which became a new but welcome little ritual for us while we were in the US.  Even now, I still can't believe how little I knew about what was just due south of us.  The beach isn't everything about the country (naturally), but somehow, when that January vibe sets in, it can mean a lot.  We learned to love much about Mexico, venturing to see more and more each time, but it's Tulum that really won our hearts.

All of our recommendations for our trip always came from This Gringo Honeymoon, a Tulum and overall Mexico pro, to include her tip on the Playa Azul hotel.  We enjoyed it so much the first time, we came back for more the second time around. It's simple...but perfect, at least for us.  Tulum takes some getting used to at first, and when we arrived with a toddler in tow for our second trip, there were a few things to think through like refrigeration and milk and all that, especially with the electricity sit, but honestly, just about everyone couldn't be more friendly and accomodating, and there always seemed to be a solution to everything...

The thing about traveling to the beach with a toddler is that - like on any trip - you'll see things in a somewhat different way.  Less time for reading, more time for watching clouds...Less time for sleeping in, but more time to catch that uniquely pretty morning light that means a full day of staring at the ocean is still ahead of you.

For those that are vacation "doers" - like, dare I say, we used to be - there is in fact lots to do but probably in a different way than in most places.  As a friend likes to say, sometimes the most challenging thing is to walk down the beach to try to decide just where dinner should be that evening.   But there is the beach and lots in the vicinity which we've visited, and sea kayaking and all that.  It's a fantastic place to read and if you have a few fish tacos and a good book, you'll be surprised just how quickly the day can go by without an electronic in sight...

In this past week we've had friends who just came back from Tulum, who just booked it or who were just talking about it themselves and I have to admit, we're a bit heartsick for it.  Interestingly enough, along with the natural things to miss about being in the US like friends and family, one of the things we were surprised to miss the most is the proximity to this special place.  Sometimes there's just something reassuring about knowing that some of the most peaceful days you knew are just a couple of hours away, rather than halfway across the world.

It might take us a while, but I have a feeling we'll be back for this view someday...

  1. I told newcomers to Tulum on our most recent trip that the only way I can ever leave is to remind myself that I can come back....
