They have a beautiful little shop on Sielergasse, where you can try on hats to your heart’s content, and a great fashion shop across the road if you need a little dress to go with the hat that you just bought. They have been making hats since 1903 (a young brand by Viennese standards). They still make the hats in Vienna (though there have been some rumors of Bratislava as of late) right off of Schwedenplatz. More importantly, the hats are made entirely by hand and it shows – or should I say, it fits. Like a glove. Or at least like a hat should. Once you try one on, it is really hard to go back to anything not hand made.
After knowing how much I hesitated on the hat, and after the whole disappointment with the photograph, diplo-husband marched me right back to the store in Vienna and we didn’t leave until I had one picked out and boxed up. Sometimes diplo-husband is just the best. My final choice is above – what do you think?
Muhlbauer is modernizing by the way – they have a website on which you can actually purchase things but still, if you’re in Vienna (or Salzburg), make some time to try these on in person – you won’t regret it.
