Diplo Repost: Can’t wait to see our beloved solarium in Berchtesgaden! We’re on our way this weekend!
When you check into a resort here in Austria or Germany, one of the first things they point out is the location of their solarium. What is a solarium you ask? Well, basically, it’s a big room with a pool, with glass windows overlooking some kind of vista, with the heat cranked up, and a bunch of Europeans on loungers in bathrobes, behaving as if they were on the shores of the mediterranean. It’s inside, but everyone acts as if it’s outside, wearing sunglasses, and making tanning like gestures, and laying around listlessly.
The first time we really saw one of these was in late May, with gorgeous weather outside. We simply couldn’t fathom why people would be laying inside, when you could be outside (now we know by the way – because there could be a DRAFT outside).
Needless to say, once winter rolled around and gray skies hit Vienna, you can pretty much guess where you could find us. That’s right. In the solarium. Also laying around in our bathrobes, soaking up faux rays in the faux heat, hightailing it to the windows nearest the sun. This is one Austria-ism we’ve made our own.
Our two favorites are at the Berchtesgaden Inter-Continental and the Loisium in Langenlois, but we discovered a new one to add to the favorites list when we went away this pass weekend to Schloss Velden (more on that in the coming days) – bring your shades, we’ll see you there.
