Baby, you can drive my (beaded) car...

We're going to shift gears to a bit of a Mexico themed week this week - I still have a couple of great things to share from our trip and thought it would be nice to wrap up before the DC heat comes full force.  And when that heat comes (um, we're expecting 90 degrees today  - in APRIL), we'll all be looking for places to hide.  Especially me, dealing with heat is not one of my fortes...

One place I've been wanting to duck into is the National Museum of the American Indian, where the Vochol VW Beetle car is still being displayed until April 27.  This little vehicle gives a whole new meaning to diy crats - over 2,000,000 glass seed beads were hand applied by Huichol Indian communities for a mosaic of decorations. And it took two familes of 4 about 9,000 hours.  Wow.  That's pretty much all I have to say to that.  And I think it's great that the exhibits at this particular museum are getting broader and more on a rotation basis.  I have to say that architecturally, its' one of my favorite buildings on the mall, but inside, it's a bit harder to navigate to get the full value.  That's why often times this a great place to pop in and see something specific and maybe grab some lunch at the cafe, one of the better ones at the Smithsonian in general I think (it's one of the more interesting ones at least).

You can keep up with the cars adventures on it's on blog here  - it's in Spanish but has tons of photos and videos  - and if you're not able to see it in person, catch the video tour below.
