In honor of meat-free lenten friday’s (the original “meat free monday”, thanks mcCartney family for reinventing the already existing), I thought I would feature some shots from the Rialto fish market.
I read somewhere once that during Carnivale the fish vendors dress up in costume and toss fish at each other at the market, but this being our third year in a row, I have never found this to be the case. Nonetheless, the market is a riot of colors and Venetian locals buying up goods and scurrying off aggressively with their plaid shopping trolleys nearly pushing you off the vaporetto or the nearest bridge. While I don’t fault them – I would push off a tourist or two if I were a Venetian resident observing the behavior of many a visitor to Venice – this year I was able to take to battle seriously behind the wheels of my Maclaren. Attenzione prego!
True to my love of fifties era fonts, I fell in love with the red price numbers – as well as the gentlemen fish monger who managed to fillet an entire fish while smoking one cigarette.
