Not to toot my own horn, but we’re seven weeks into diplo-baby and I’ve managed to avoid the crazy eyes, in accordance with my new year’s resolutions, hurrah! However, I can’t say the same for crazy hair. I caught a glimpse of it in the mirror last week on a particularly nutty day, between meltdowns. And it forced me to address the issue I’ve been avoiding like the plague – do I get “the Mom”?
“The Mom” is that perennial bob haircut every woman to get seems about a couple of months after having a baby, usually once they’re confident enough to leave their child with someone else so that they can run to the salon, and once their own hair drives them sufficiently crazy. Tom Cruise made Katie Holmes do it, Heidi Klum did it, Eva Longoria did it even though she didn’t actually have a baby in real life, just to make it more believable for TV…and Carey Mulligan seems to be sporting it, though I think in her case it’s more of a “growing out the pixie”.
The grand irony is that for my hair, i.e. fine, the mom bob is actually more work. I’ve had it before (also in a growing out the pixie phase…twice), since then I actually have to style it in the morning, whereas with the long locks, lifeless though they may be, I truly wash and go, pulling the hair back in a ponytail or bun. Now, I could use a haircut either way (and perhaps a few highlights won’t hurt, to give the illusion of languid days in the sun)- it’s been way too long. Normally, I was still getting cuts in DC since my one attempt to have it done here in Vienna resulted in a layered nighmare reminiscent of Rachel on Friends…from the first season. I was silently cursing the stylist for being so out of touch, when it occurred to me in horror that maybe I’m old enough where maybe the Friends cut is actually coming back into fashion. Please tell me that’s not possible.
So…step one is to find an actual salon in Vienna…step two…decide how much to cut? Thoughts?
