As a final hurrah, the diplo-husband took the wheels out for a last weekend trip just the two of us. No car seats, no strollers, no diaper bags yet to weigh us down – just an overnight bag and total flexibility. I think it might be awhile before we get those two luxuries again – like sometime after junior graduates from college.
We’ve been meaning to check out the Salzkammergut region for awhile and finally bit the bullet. We were particularly lucky with the weather – we left Vienna grays behind and had sunshine and nearly sixty degrees start to finish – it was practially tropical (especially to someone 9 months pregnant!).
We did an overnight at the Weisses Rossl in – it couldn’t be more Austrian if it tried. Packing your own dirndl would be totally appropriate attire. Speaking of which, during Carnival season, the hotel collaborates with the dirndl maker Gossl for “Dirndl Fly-In” day – a jumping contest into their heated pool in the lake in which anyone wearing a dirndl can participate. I’ve been dying to take part but it always coincides with another event that we’re booked for – maybe this year!
As an added bonus, the food at the hotel was amazing. We were expecting some stodgy dumplings and schnitzel but were pleased to find great dishes on tap at their restaurant rivaling some of the best meals we’ve had in Vienna, and a gorgeous Champagne breakfast spread included in the room rate.
They even appear to be child friendly at the hotel so looks like we’ll be back – next time with all the car seat, strollers, diaper bags in tow!
